How to Choose the Right Material for Your Corporate Award

The material you choose for a corporate award does more than determine how it looks — it communicates the significance of the achievement and reflects the values of your organisation. Here's a practical guide to the main options.

Match the material to the occasion

Different materials convey different levels of importance:

  • Optical crystal — Executive recognition, lifetime achievements, high-profile events. Exceptional clarity and a genuinely premium feel.
  • Metal — Aluminium, stainless steel, brass. Modern, durable, and sophisticated. Strong for corporate and industry awards.
  • Glass — Elegant and refined, though slightly softer in brilliance than optical crystal.
  • Acrylic — Versatile and cost-effective. With the right design and back-printing, it can look sharp at a fraction of the crystal price.
  • Timber — Warm and authentic. Well-suited to environmental, heritage, or community-focused recognition.

Align it with your brand

The award should feel like it belongs to your organisation. Modern brands tend to suit metal or acrylic with clean lines. Traditional or prestige-focused brands work well with optical crystal or glass. Eco-conscious organisations often gravitate toward timber or recycled materials. Creative and innovative industries can push further with mixed materials or custom-cut acrylic shapes.

Think about durability

Awards are often displayed for years. Metal and acrylic are highly resistant to wear and breakage. Timber is sturdy and ages well when properly finished. Crystal and glass are the most prestigious options but require more careful handling — worth considering if the award will be transported or handled frequently.

Consider design flexibility

Some materials open up more customisation options than others. Acrylic is excellent for custom shapes, layered designs, and vibrant UV printing. Metal suits CNC cutting, engraving, and a range of surface finishes. Crystal and glass are best for elegant shapes and refined engraving. Combining materials — crystal with a metal base, timber with a metal plate — creates distinctive pieces with strong perceived value.

Budget honestly

Roughly speaking: acrylic is the most affordable starting point, timber and metal sit in the mid range, glass is a step up, and optical crystal commands the premium. The goal isn't to spend the most — it's to match the material to what the occasion warrants. An under-specified material for a major milestone feels like an afterthought; an over-specified one for a minor recognition can feel awkward too.

Sustainability

If this matters to your organisation, it's worth asking about it. Timber from sustainable sources, recycled metals, and eco-friendly acrylic alternatives are all achievable — and choosing them adds a layer of meaning that some recipients genuinely appreciate.
